Chunky arm knit blankets & why this trend needs to go away
Updated: Dec 7, 2019
Chunky arm knit blankets have been trending for awhile- and are once again in the headlines. I opened the Etsy holiday guide and in their top recommended was...Chunky Knit Blankets.
Now, don't get me wrong...I'm all about something cozy and of course, I'm all for hand knit - but - there's a few important things to know if you've been eyeing the super chunky, arm knit style blankets.
*The majority of these blankets are arm knit with roving - which is actually what we use to spin into yarn. Generally, what that means, is that the fibers are much more delicate and vulnerable to splitting and fraying because the "twist" in the fiber isn't fully set.
*The best use for these blankets is....an Instagram picture. Or maybe a guest bedroom that you don't ever use. Unless the blankets are felted after being knit (which ultimately would alter the look and feel) - a simple snag can instantly change the look of your beloved (and pricey) new blanket.
If you like the style of these mega chunky knit blankets, I recommend that you consider the following alternatives...
*There are chunky knit yarns that can give a similar look and feel, while also providing more durability and longevity (after all, you're putting in your time and energy making it...don't you want it to last?)
>>>Don't forget, you can also get creative and combine several strands of worsted or bulky weight to make a chunky yarn too!
*If you really like the look of roving-style arm knit blankets, consider using a clothing steamer to slightly felt the roving for some added protection/durability.
*Like the instant gratification of arm knitting? Consider big knitting needles or a large sized crochet hook. For bulky knit blankets, you can use anywhere from size 17-50 and for crocheting, opt for hook size M-T+.
*Last but not least...here are a few free pattern ideas to knit or crochet a cozy blanket:
